i dyed my naturally light brown hair in february ALL black. it was the simplest way, seeing as my hair back then was light blonde with bits of black in it. now my roots are showing and the colour's not really black anymore - more of a dark brown with reddish tones - this i'm scared of because of the impending ginger stage when dying back to blonde!

your hair turned orange at the roots because you didn't get a toner. dark hair doesn't just turn blonde when you bleach it. also, you probably didn't apply much bleach to your ends which is why they didn't turn orange as you said.

If you bleach it, your hair will be ruined - dry, dull, breakage. You hair stylist was right not to put bleach on relaxed hair, your hair could literally fall off where it was relaxed at - then all of your hair would be about 3" long. I've seen this type of stuff happen before - hair will break off righ in your stylists hands. Where a blond wig for the show, cuz if you bleach it, you may be wearing a blond wig for a lot longer than one day.

I also agree about going to a hair salon. I have dyed my hair so many times and have been so disappointed. The salon had always gotten it to my desired color. (The particular salon that I go to will recolor for little or no charge if you are totally dissatisfied with the result.) That can get a little pricey depending on the salon.

One think that has worked for me when I was sporting an undesirable hair color was to wear it up, or try to style it differently. I would curl it and put it up as nice as I could, so the attention would be drawn more to the style than the color.

It's probably a little late for this but another thing that you can do if you should ever want to dye your hair again, is to cut a small piece off before you dye it, so when you do go to the salon you can show the hairdresser the color you previously had and they can match the dye to your original hair color. I still have a lock of my original hair color!
